Fishing Kayaks
Buyers Guide

fishing kayak paddles

Specially designed fishing kayaks have evolved from the sit on top kayaks with added features such as rod holders, anchor systems and electronic fish finders.

In the last few years kayak fishing has become a huge sport. Kayaks can be purchased inexpensively and have very little maintenance costs, opening the sport up to a range of people. Another advantage with kayak fishing is that they can be stored in small spaces and launched quickly.

The kayak has many other advantages for keen anglers, this is because it enables them to reach hidden bays, shallow water reefs, or follow shoals of fish feeding offshore, which were all previously inaccessible when fishing from the shore.

We have a wide selection of kayaks that are suitable for fishing, to see our range please browse our online shop or alternatively pop in to our Exeter shop, located on the Quay. We also offer a custom outfitting service, in order to create your perfect fishing kayak.

Before choosing a kayak there are several things to consider, your size and build, fitness level, where you intend to fish, estuary, river, open sea, the type of fishing and gear that you will have to carry, fly, lure or bait, how far you will have to paddle to reach your marks and of course your budget.

The majority of kayak fishermen and women choose to fish from a Sit-on-Top (SOT) kayak,  as they are easy to use and if you happen to capsize you can climb back on (with a little practice!)

Here are some features and models to look out for when choosing your kayak.

Stability.

All modern Fishing sit on top kayaks are designed to be stable and easy to use, with a little practice some people even stand up to fly cast from their kayaks! The stability of a kayak is governed by the width of the kayak. The wider the kayak the more stable it will be. If you really want a stable kayak why not check out the Ocean kayak Caper angler, at almost 79cm wide or the Wilderness Systems Ride 135 at 80cm wide.needs link

Speed.

If you want to cover a lot of ground, to get to out of the way marks then longer kayaks with better glide will get you there with less effort. The longer the water line of a kayak the quicker it will be and the less speed it will loose between paddle strokes. The Downside of a longer boat though is that it will be slightly less manoeuvrable. If you are looking for a quick kayak the why not check out the Ocean kayak Ultra 4.7 and the Wilderness systems Tarpon 160.

All Rounders.

Do you want a Fishing kayak that will do pretty much anything? That comes with enough features to get you started, but has enough space to upgrade? There are already some classic fishing kayaks, which have become a bench mark for quality and ease of use. These are kayaks that are quick enough to get you to your favourite mark, but are manoeuvrable enough to get in between the rocks, stable enough for anyone, and offer plenty of scope for future upgrades. The Ocean kayak Prowler Elite 4.1 is a well outfitted all round fishing kayak that has four rod holders, plenty of storage space and room for future upgrades. The Wilderness systems Tarpon 120 is a high spec boat that has a comfortable and adjustable seat, great storage options, innovative easy to adjust fittings and plenty of room for future upgrades. The New Perception Triumph  also looks set to become a kayak fishing classic. It features three rod holders, an adjustable seat and bags of storage options. These kayaks are true all rounders and a perfect starting point for any aspiring kayak angler. They all offer great stability, versatility, ease of use and offer plenty of scope for future upgrades.

The Ultimate fish hunter.

Do you want to be a species hunter with a boat dripping with every extra, in order to net ‘that’ fish? These are boats that come with the space and capacity to create the ultimate fishing kayak. They have plenty of room for adding extras; fishfinders, anchor systems, and more! The Ocean kayak Ultra 4.3   comes with an innovative centre hatch for adding electronics like fishfinders, four rod holders and has plenty of storage. While the Wilderness systems Tarpon 140 is a sleek and quick kayak that has a huge rear storage well, an amazing and comfortable seating system, the innovative and easy to adjust Slide-Trax accessory system and plenty of hatch space for storing gear. We also offer an in-house custom outfitting service so that we can help you to create your very own perfect fishing kayak.

Outfitting.

All of the Ocean kayak Angler spec kayaks come ready fitted with at least two flush mounted rod holders, the Ultra and Elite models come with four rod holders as standard. The Ocean kayak models also come with a seat and backrest and at least one storage hatch. The Wilderness systems Angler spec kayak range all come with two flush mounted rod holders, a Scotty rod holder and two storage hatches. The Wilderness Systems kayaks also have the Slide-Trax system which allows you to easily add, remove and adjust a whole range of other accessories to your kayak.

We also offer a custom in-house outfitting service to personalise your kayak. There are a wide range of fishing accessories including rod holders, fishfinders and anchor systems. We can advise you on what will suit your needs, how they fit to your kayak, and we can also fit them for you.
