Adventures in Kindness:
Postcards from lives on the edge

With Justin Featherstone MC

7pm Thursday 28th November 2024 at AS Watersports

Months after a challenging operational tour of Iraq in 2004, a climbing accident in the French Alps caused Justin to change the focus of his expeditions to mountains, rivers and rainforests from seeking technical challenge to something very different.  A new pull saw him travelling to remote regions to live with traditional communities to understand their way of life. What he found surprised him and pushed him further to explore the place of kindness in communities as diverse as the otter fishermen of Bangladesh, to former Konyak headhunters in Nagaland and the Wai Wai deep in the Guyanese rainforest. In this talk, he will share his experiences, the circumstances that led to them and the new understanding these reflections have created.

To date the same number of people have walked on the moon as have completed this challenge. Come listen to how they prepared themselves for this challenge, whether they have now fully defrosted and the lessons learnt along the way.

The Inside Passage – A 2000km unsupported kayak expedition

7pm Thursday 25th January 2024 at AS Watersports

In May to July 2023 our team embarked on a 2000km unsupported kayak expedition of The Inside Passage from Olympia in Washington State along the Fjordlands of Western British Columbia to Alaska.

The team comprised two able bodied civilians and six veterans with a variety of injuries such as head/abdomen gunshot wounds, bilateral above knee amputations, viral induced paralysis and PTSD, chronologically from The Falklands conflict to Iraq and Afghanistan. The team is aligned to raising funds for ‘The Not Forgotten’ a military charity, founded in 1920, which has been supporting ex-service personnel with disabilities through the provision of leisure & recreational activities, travel, holidays and outings. Members of the team are testament to the success of these objectives, having benefited personally from the services of The Not Forgotten in their early stages of rehabilitation. Five members of the team will share their experiences with you of the highs and lows of the expedition as well as logistical and medical planning, kit/kayak selection and training up some members who had never previously been in a kayak!
