The Historic Exeter canal is a nice and easy location that is perfect for all paddlers including families and novices. With lots of great wildlife to be seen along the Exe Salt Marshes and two great pubs offering tasty food and thirst-quenching drinks, there is something for everyone. Please remember to paddle (and drink) responsibly.

The first stop, The Double Locks pub, is just 45 minutes away. Our most popular trip, as you can have a drink and paddle back within 2 hours. If you are feeling up for a longer outing, take advantage of our Day Saver rate and head down to The Turf Hotel.

Kayak Hire in Exeter

Choose from our 1 or 2 person sit-on-top kayaks. Great for beginners, using a double-ended paddle is easy to get to grips with and will keep you going in a straight line. All of our kayaks feature comfortable backrests and generous storage areas, perfect for longer trips.

Canoe Hire in Exeter

The traditional “Canadian” style open canoe is the classic canal cruiser. With enough space for 2 Adults and a Child (over 8) everyone gets a single-ended paddle to get you moving. The Canoe requires a bit more coordination than a kayak, so teamwork is key! You are rewarded with a drier ride, being a bit further away from the water.

Stand-up Paddleboards (SUP’s) keep growing in popularity! We have a fleet of premium Red Paddle Co Inflatable paddleboards to hire in a range of sizes to suit all paddlers. No experience needed, come and give it a go! A great way to see if you want to invest in the sport, or just have a bit of fun on (and in?) the water!

  • Full payment is required to confirm your booking
  • No children under 8
  • 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult (18+)
  • 1 adult to a maximum of 2 children
  • For security reasons we require some form of ID: we accept Credit and debit cards, valid passports, Armed forces ID cards, a valid Full UK driving license and other international ID cards
  • Cancellation: We require 24hrs notice if you need to cancel for any reason. Less than 24hrs notice and we will not be able to give you a refund. If for any reason AS Watersports have to cancel, we will refund hire charges but are not liable for any other expense incurred.

Where you can paddle

Exeter Shipping Canal

We are based right on the historic Exeter shipping canal, offering calm waters and beautiful scenery just a short paddle from the shop. How far you can get depends on a lot of factors, so please use these timings as a guide. 

2 Hour Hire - To The Pub!

Our most popular kayak hire duration, head straight down the canal to The Double Locks Pub. Usually taking 45 minutes each way, you will have enough time to stop for a drink. You will not need to remove the boats from the water, easy pontoons at either end make this a great option for less able paddlers and younger families.

Full Route Information

3 Hour Hire - Grab a bite to eat

Our 3 hour hire allows time to stop for lunch at The Double Locks. Alternatively, use the pontoons to lift your boats out, and a quick portage to the other side of the lock will get you back on the water, take note of the time and turn around when you hit the halfway mark!

Full Day Hire - Explore the whole Canal!

For the intrepid adventurers, get going early and you will be able to head all the way down to The Turf Hotel. After carrying your boats around The Double Locks, it is a beautiful and clear stretch all the way to the end of the canal. You will see plenty of wildlife as you pass the Devon Wildlife Trust and Exminster Marshes RSPB Nature reserves, keep an eye out for the distinctive blue flash of the Kingfisher!

A Pelican Explorer 146 DLX canoe could be one of the best purchases you make if you are looking for a single canoe that can do a multitude of things for not a lot of money. Well, you certainly get a good mixture of all those things with a Pelican Explorer 146 DLX.

First off, the Pelican Explorer 146 DLX is a nice and stable open canoe, so straight away it gives you the confidence to just be on the water and focus on enjoying your day out. The low maintenance seats are plastic as are the folding backrests and the paddling position is great for relaxed, efficient paddle strokes. The middle bench seat is great for taking a friend and inside there is even a handy little cooler section to keep your refreshments cool and easy to access. There is enough space on board to take a dog with you on your trip or even some lightweight camping gear if you fancy a longer journey.

The hull of the Pelican Explorer 146 DLX is made from the wonderful Ram-X material. This is a High Molecular Weight plastic that gives amazing durability at a weight and cost that is extremely reasonable. The plastic bow and stern end plates have comfortable carry handles built in and the whole canoe has an overall feel of quality.
